POTHRA Press Update And Other Happenings

Since our Kickstarter page went live we have been receiving a great amount of press! We’ve recently been on popular blogs iso50 and coolhunting, check out what they have to say!

The NOOKA team visited the life-sized dollhouse that Target built in Grand Central Station today; we were impressed with the large amount of work and design that went into this project even though it was only open for two days! You can read up about the dollhouse here.

We also had our collection shown off at a press preview recently, with pieces from the past and present (and future – stay tuned!). Lots of press teams and bloggers got to see our products first-hand, and blogged about it – like this post on DenimHunt, for example.

Stay tuned for more updates from the NOOKA team!

Our secret recycling project known as POTHRA has gone live on Kickstarter! This project takes a usually discarded by-product of the daily routine – coffee grounds – and turns it into a beautiful, functional and unique item. The different blends of used coffee grounds interact with the resin used to craft the pots to make one-of-a-kind creations. Not even an hour later, the kickstarter page was blogged about on the design blog Wasabi Mountain! You can see our page and pledge here.

If you want to make yourself stand out, this is a must-have gadget.” We’re glad you like them Tuan! You can read his review here.

Pecha Kucha

It’s great to be bilingual. Matthew Waldman went to Japan last year to talk about Nooka. There’s a twist to this presentation though, Pecha Kucha , is known for their 20×20 presentation format (20 images, each for 20 seconds). Great right? What’s even more fascinating is how Matthew can jump back and forth in speaking both Japanese and English. Check out the video presentation by clicking here.

Nookafied Mate!

It’s always a great feeling to get emails from those who have been supporting our brand religiously. We got an email from Chris from Australia saying that he just got his 16th watch from Nooka. He even calls himself a watch addict and we couldn’t agree more. This blog post is the least we can do to show how much we appreciate one of our followers. Cheers!

Openers: Jules Kim (Bijules)

Jules Kim, the creator of Bijules, is unapologetically conquering the balance of art and aesthetics in jewelry. This makes her one of those rare artists who harbor the ability to create objects that mirror the beautiful and chaotic world we inhabit: with all its humor, tragedy, ambivalence, love and hate…

To be in the company of Jules is to be in the presence of a seer – a visionary: who calmly describes the world’s mysteries in ways never before thought or expressed. At times it’s difficult to separate the artist from the art – overwhelmed with the beauty of a goddess, fantasies seem much more nearer, allowing you to discover novelty within yourself. Jules doesn’t just make jewelry: she makes an experience. With an ear to the ground of the fashion world, Jules has demonstrated her ability to transcend the ordinary limits of vision and thought. Its difficult to know what to do with it…then you realize Jules has given you a universal experience that adapts to your current situation. You allow the jewelry to emanate the confidence the creator bestowed upon it at the moment of its creation. Defying time, normality, and traditional forms of expression, Jules has proved that she is an artist to be reckoned with, sought after, and cherished.

Bijules editorial coverage includes Italian Vogue, Russian Vogue, Numero, Numero Tokyo, Elle, Elle Denmark, Blink, iD, Blackbook, L’Officiel, Jalouse, Nylon, Oyster, NY Mag, Dazed, Another, Pop Magazine and more. Celebrity clients are Beyonce, Fergie, Lindsey Lohan, Mariah Carey, Shakira, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kelly Rowland, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Paula Abdul, Nicole Richie, Santogold, and Eve.

MW: Innovation is a term you hear so much in terms of technology, but not enough in other parts of our lives. How do feel about this?
JK: Innovation is a term i use everyday and i do not exist in the terribly complicated world of tech, so i feel just as passionate about my innovative and original theories as any tech person might!

MW: You hosted the fabulous la bain parties at the standard hotel this past summer in NYC. How is this part of your overall strategy for your jewelry?
JK: Bijules is a brand, it is a brand born from a high end jewlery product. The beautifully made jewelry with innovative concepts represent the base of bijules; whereas, the choices we make should also have a home full of thoughtfulness and individual expression. When I host an event or party, it is creating a platform for our choices to reiterate the potential beauty we have both on the surface of your skin and deep inside.

MW: What do you love the most about NYC?
JK: I love that we CAN DO ANYTHING. if anyone says no, i find a way around their no to eventually equal just as a good as yes.

MW: What are you working on now that has you most excited?
JK:I have just launched my store, the bijulesterie…I launch a new fashion film with asvoff in November at the centre pompidou in Paris and look forward to many more collaborations with celebs and anyone who is part of the Bijules movement…

INNOVATION For A Tangible World

On October 26th we hosted the first of a series of networking events for designers, artists, technologists, innovators, and inventors in NYC. The Great Hall of the New York Hall of Science Museum was the perfect location for the event. It gave the perfect mood and ambiance of the party and of course, the brand NOOKA.

Innovators who showcased their artwork include Sougwen Chung, Amanda Parkes, Nina Tandon, SOFTlab, Pelle Designs, byAMT, Formnation, The LED Artist, Rux Design, and others.

Music was provided by DJ Moderna. Catering was provided by Chef Roble

It was a great success and we are planning more in this series next year.

Miss J !

Miss J Alexander, runway diva coach extraordinaire and former judge of America’s Next Top Model, visited his long time friend Matthew Waldman of Nooka Inc. Miss J also got Nookafied with some product and decided to have a mini photo shoot!

Marlon Gobel S/S 2013

For Marlon Gobel’s Spring Summer 2013 collection called “The Stars”, he has tapped Nooka once again for a collaboration. It was another natural partnership since both brands have a similar design aesthetic.

Openers: Teeel (Jim Smith)

TEEEL (Jim Smith) is an electronic producer/songwriter from New Jersey and owner of the electronic music label, Synthemesc Recordings. Inspired by synthesizer and the 80s new wave movement, Teeel credits his sound to marathon movie watching and being an obsessive gear head. Creating music in a 10×10 teal painted room, stacked with synthesizers and guitars with walls covered with vintage Moog ads, TEEEL produces music that ranges from hypnotic synthpop to dreamy disco and dark electronica.

His critically acclaimed debut album, “AMULET” (Moodgadget Records) has generated quite the buzz in the blog world as well as being featured on KEXP radio. His sophomore album “University Heights” was just released on his own label, Synthemesc. His recent appearance at SXSW gave him more exposure making 2012 a big year with a slew of remixes, live performances, and new songs in the cue.

MW: How do you keep yourself inspired and/or motivated?

T: Honestly, I’m inspired by life. I’m very passionate and slightly obsessed with whatever I’m getting into. Whether I’m designing a brochure at work, recording a new song, or working on my home, I constantly strive for perfection. I think I gain inspiration from everything and everyone. My friends are successful artists and musicians as well and we feed off of each other. I don’t watch TV, the news or sports but I try to watch at least a movie a day. I love film, sound and art. I think they are all tied together and inspire me in the same way. Sometimes, halfway through a film, I’ll run into the studio to get an idea out of my head.

MW: Your music is the perfect pop soundtrack for technoprogressivist. What would make you happy to see on the charts?

T: I don’t really pay attention to the charts. I think there is such great music out there that will never see a large crowd. I enjoy the sacred music that people really aren’t aware of. I listen to a lot of weird music and It’s so fun discovering a new artist and having to research them to learn more, find older tracks and videos, etc. As for my music, I’d love to get more involved with movies. Drive 2, The Evil Dead remake maybe? I’m really getting more into sound design and scores.

MW: You recently started you own record label in the middle of what some people say is the death throes of the industry. Tell me your strategy?

T: Synthemesc (Synth Records) is more of an artist collective with a similar vision. Since we’re a digital label, the artists have the liberty to do their own physical releases and retain all the rights to the material. I didn’t start the label to make money. Let’s be honest, there isn’t much money in MP3 sales on a select underground genre with a limited audience. With the use of sharing sites, people just don’t spend the money like they used to. It’s refreshing though. The music is getting out there. The artists get exposure, cross promote and support each other. We all share our music with each other, radio stations, blogs and more. We bounce new ideas and it really motivates everyone to try harder. There is no politics, drama and everyone has the same fun mentality. With this thinking, there is no way to fail.

MW: I agree that the charts can be depressing but sometimes there is a breath of fresh air. What do you think of an act like Fun. or Arcade fire for example charting in the middle of all the American idol crap? as for music that will never see the charts, I LOVE prince rama – have you heard them?

T:Absolutely! I love the fact M83 is doing really well and selling out stadiums, his album was my personal favorite from last year, I was also excited to hear Crystal Castles on the radio quite a bit, I enjoy Metric and some of the newer indie groups using more sythesizers. Gotye is huge now too. To be honest, even some of the radio pop has some great electronic production behind it. In all the garbage out there, there is still something to grab onto. I haven’t checked out Prince Rama yet. I’ll have to make that a priority.
